Where are the Best Places to Rock Climb in Houston?If you’re into rock climbing, you’re spoiled for choice in and around Houston, Texas. From natural landscapes to rock-climbing gyms, you can find the perfect amount of difficulty, scenery, and other people to keep you motivated. The next time you’re in the mood for climbing, check out these places in or near Houston.

Texas Rock Gym

When you want to get the most out of your climb, start your journey at Houston’s original indoor rock climbing venue — Texas Rock Gym. This climbing gym offers courses for people of all ages and skill levels. While safety is their first concern, you’ll get the chance to test your skills on a wide variety of courses. If you’re fresh to the sport, check out their adult and youth programs, which offer one-on-one or class instruction.

Daily rates start at just $20, but you can get a price break with a 10-climb deal for $170 or a monthly membership for only $60. Texas Rock Gym is located at 1526 Campbell Road. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Tonkawa Falls

If you’re willing to travel the three hours to Tonkawa Falls, you’ll be rewarded with one of the best outdoor climbing areas in the Lone Star State. Located just west of Waco, Tonkawa Falls is a beautiful spot known for its swimming holes, waterfall, and rock climbing. One of the best aspects of climbing at Tonkawa Falls is that most of the overhangs are over water. If you struggle or lose your grip, you plummet into a refreshing pool at the bottom. Keep in mind that Tonkawa Falls has no lifeguards on duty, so always use your best judgment.

Stone Moves

Situated among the suburbs of northwest Houston, Stone Moves is one of the best rock-climbing gyms in the area. Not only are the climbs fun and satisfactory for all levels, but the artwork adds another dimension. Started in 2004, Stone Moves has been a top-rated climbing gym for the past 15 years. At Stone Moves, you can hire a personal instructor or take part in their weekly classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students.

Daily rates start at $14, while a monthly membership will run you $54. Stone Moves is located at 6970 Cypress Creek Pkwy. Hours are from 3 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

inSPIRE Rock Climbing Gym

If you’ve never climbed before, inSPIRE Rock Climbing Gym is a stellar gym to start your adventure. Staff teaches you how to top rope and how to use the auto-belay for free, which is often a stiff charge elsewhere.

Day rates are $16.95; monthly memberships start at $68 a month. Located at 403 E. Louretta Road, inSPIRE Rock Climbing Gym is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday; and 1 to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
