Honda HR-V - Russell & Smith HondaThose considering a new compact SUV in the near future have an interesting choice in front of them. Should you buy the new 2019 model release, or the new 2018? Sometimes, the features between two back-to-back years are rather similar, making the choice easy. However, in the case of the Honda HR-V, the 2018 and 2019 models have some key differences that present a choice to the buyer. This guide will help you decide if you should go with the 2018 or 2019 HR-V.

An Overview of Key Differences

There are a few key differences between the 2018 and 2019 model HR-Vs. This guide also digs into these topics in detail below, but here is the basic information. The 2018 model had both automatic and manual transmission options, but the 2019 model does not offer a manual transmission. There have been a few adjustments and additions to the trim levels on 2019 models and a noticeable but not large price increase. Lastly, there are some additional technology and comfort features on the newer model.

2018 and 2019 Honda HR-V Trim Comparison

The changes to trim levels are one of the significant differences between the 2018 and 2019 models. The 2018 Honda HR-V has three trim levels. The LX and EX trims have options for manual transmissions, while the EX-L trim is only available as an automatic. There is also an option to purchase an all-wheel-drive upgrade on all trims. When looking at the 2019 trim levels, you’ll see two additional trims with the manual transmission options removed. The 2019 Honda HR-V adds the Sport and Touring trims to the lineup. The all-wheel-drive upgrade is still available in 2019 models.

Price Differences

Since manual transmissions are generally more affordable and that feature was removed in 2019, the base price is a bit higher than the 2018 base price with a manual transmission. However, when comparing the base automatic’s price in 2018 to the base in 2019, the difference in MSRP is small. The increase on the EX and EX-L trims is $1,200 and $200 respectively and the new touring trim is $3,400 higher than the 2018 EX-L model.

New Features in 2019

The higher price tag, however, isn’t just to squeeze in a few extra trims. There have been a few improvements to the interior of the vehicle for 2019 models. The 2019 Honda HR-V has been engineered for a quieter cockpit and includes extra sound dampening capabilities. The infotainment system has been slightly upgraded from the previous year, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are available.

When deciding which HR-V is right for you, it’s important to consider all of your needs compared to the model’s features. If you’re looking for a manual transmission, you’re tied down to the 2018 model. Other than that, there are a lot of similarities between the two models, so it could be up to how good of a deal you can get at the dealership.
