Things to do in HoustonFeel like you’ve done everything there is to do in Houston? We’re here to tell you that may not be the case. Houston is home to some strange hidden gems that you’ve almost certainly never heard of. Some attractions are just curiosities for driving by or spending a few minutes while others are full-blown trips that will eat up hours of your time in the city. So, buckle up and enjoy the ride as we list off some of the strangest attractions in Houston.

  1. Get Creepy at the National Museum of Funeral History

Did you know America had a National Museum of Funeral History? Well, it’s right here in Houston. Just north of the downtown area on Barren Springs Drive, you’ll find an unsuspecting building that looks like it was once used as spare warehouse space. However, once inside, there are plenty of strange and unique things to uncover in this unique Houston museum.

If you’re into the strange an unusual, you can spend hours looking at some of the unique coffins, learning about the history of the hearse, or uncovering the ancient history of embalming. For a more thorough experience, enroll in the art school on location which also teaches embalming.

  1. Dig Into Houston’s Rich History at the Art Car Museum

In the mid-80s, the first few art cars were rolling through the streets of Houston. Since then, they’ve become entrenched as part of its striking alternative art scene. At the Art Car Museum on Heights Boulevard, you can explore a gallery of amazing works of art that used cars as their canvas. Some have extra welding work on the body to make a new unique shape while others are simply covered in objects that relate to a theme. There is even one car that has been converted to look like a car-sized cockroach.

  1. Get Squeaky Clean at the World’s Longest Car Wash

Sometimes your car needs a bath, and you can only give your vehicle the world’s longest bath at the Buc-ee’s Car Wash on Katy Freeway. In fact, the car wash holds an official Guinness World Record and is just 45 feet short of an entire football field. As you’re whisked through this magic tunnel of bubbles, blow dryers, and mops, your car will be treated to just about five minutes of pure, clean fun.

  1. Press the Red Button

What does this button do? Well, you can find out by pressing the big red button under the Preston Street Bridge. Once pressed, it triggers a bubbling action in the bayou below. This art installation was installed in 1998 and does serve an actual purpose. The water in that area is fairly still, and pressing the button creates a huge bubble, which creates enough water movement to help prevent plant growth in the water.

The next time you find yourself in Houston with nothing to do, check out one of these strange and unique spots. Nothing makes your day brighter like getting a lengthy car wash and heading out to learn about the history of embalming.
